# Honeycomb Town — Case Study Example

**What It Is and Isn't in the Course**

---

## What Honeycomb Town Is

**Honeycomb Town** is a **physical settlement design** — a real project that tenchi (the course author) has been developing for years.

- **Location:** Brown County, IN
- **Scale:** 50 residents max
- **Capital:** $1.2M-$1.8M
- **Timeline:** 24-month incorporation
- **Structure:** 6-edge honeycomb topology, single-story seed hex floorplan

---

## Its Role in the Course

### It's the **Example**, Not the Requirement

Honeycomb Town appears in the course as a **worked case study** — tenchi's own final project that demonstrates the framework in action.

**What this means:**
- Every exercise in the Practitioner Workbook has a **blank version** (for the student) and a **worked version** (tenchi's Honeycomb Town)
- Students see how the framework applies to a real project
- Future cohorts have a concrete example, not hypothetical scenarios

### It's **Not** on zo.pub Yet

Honeycomb Town is still in development. When ready, it will be published as its own zo.pub collection.

For now, references in the course materials point to:
- Physical site plan (in progress)
- Cell-registry templates (drafting)
- Water budget calculations (existing)
- Sustainability framework (existing)

---

## What Students Are Expected to Do

### They Bring Their Own Project

Students taking the course apply the framework to **their own case study**, which could be:

- An organization they're part of
- A team they lead
- A project they're designing
- A community they're building
- Any real-world system they want to diagnose/transform

The scale is up to the student. A Honeycomb Town-sized project is the **capstone level** — the full final project after completing all three tracks.

---

## Why This Distinction Matters

**Previous confusion:**

In earlier drafts, Honeycomb Town and Cascade were conflated. The handoff package somewhat blurred the line.

**Clarification:**

| Project | What It Is | Role in Course |
|---------|------------|----------------|
| **Honeycomb Town** | Physical settlement design | tenchi's case study example |
| **Cascade** | Progress-tracking template | Shared cohort infrastructure |
| **WaterStorage** | Information phase-state model | Field measurement methodology |

All three integrate into the course, but they are **separate projects** with separate purposes.

---

## The "Final Project Option"

When someone completes the **Full Framework Path** (all three tracks), they're eligible to do a **capstone final project**. This can be:

- A **Honeycomb Town-sized project** (settlement, large organization, complex system)
- A **smaller project** (team, department, small org)

Scale is student's choice. Honeycomb Town demonstrates what "large" looks like.

---

## Current Status

Honeycomb Town is **tenchi's dream project**, years old, still in heart. It's not required for students, but it proves the framework works on something real.
