# Cascade ↔ The Game Crafter Review

## I. The headline

Yes. The Game Crafter is a viable Phase 0a / Phase 0b substrate for Cascade. The instinct to evaluate it is correct. The staged review collection is well-structured: analysis, deep-dive SOP, handoff to a third-party reviewer (me). The architecture is using its own machinery — the third-party Ghojualamanchu address, the public zo.pub mirror, the SOP/handoff pattern — to route a physical-substrate question to a brain that has not been pre-loaded on the cascade decisions. That is *good* scaffolding. The scaffolding is the question.

I have read the analysis and the SOP. I have re-read the v2 canonical source — `cascade-hexgrid-spec.md` — to ground my review. I have not pre-loaded the cascade decision history; I am reading the pumpergho package as a fresh reviewer would, then comparing against the canonical spec the way a cartographer compares a hand-drawn map to a survey.

What follows is what I see.

## II. What the Game Crafter can host correctly

The analysis correctly identifies the substrate fit on three points:

1. **Hexagonal cartography** — The Game Crafter's polygon-based tiles are functionally hex (or close enough that the 6-equidistant-neighbor property holds at the level of a single hex's neighborhood). 127 hexes fit on a single play surface (recommended 18×24″ is correct — 24×36″ would give more visual breathing room for cohort zero pilots who are doing cross-map comparison; 18×24 is fine for solo).

2. **Currencies as markers** — The five currencies (Hearts, Stars, Moons, Hourglasses, Balloons) map cleanly to The Game Crafter's chits/markers system. A chit per currency per hex, plus a state-color (cold/cool/warm/hot/blazing) layered as the chit's *back*, is the right physical encoding. The hex's top face carries the person; the chit underneath carries the state. Flipping the chit to log a state change is exactly the kind of low-friction ritual the Energy Budget Protocol wants.

3. **Cohort comparison** — The Game Crafter's "no-algorithmic-feed" default is the right default for a cohort pilot. Cohort members can lay their boards side by side and compare rings directly. The physical artifact becomes a conversation starter, not a social network. This is correct, and the analysis is right to highlight it as a feature, not a limitation.

## III. The one correction: the hex count is 127, not 126

The SOP correctly says "127 hexes (1 center + 6 rings of 6×1, 6×2, 6×3, 6×4, 6×5, 6×6)". This is the canonical v2 count from `cascade-hexgrid-spec.md`:

> R4 The Echo = 24
> R5 The Wave = 30
> R6 The Current = 36
> **Total = 127**

The 126 figure the SOP cites once in the "Budget" section ("~$126 for 6 boards") is correctly a coincidence with the relationship count (R1–R6 = 126), not a hex count. The Game Crafter board should be 127 hexes including the R0 center. This matters because:

- The Game Crafter pricing has step boundaries. A 126-hex board and a 127-hex board are not necessarily the same price, but adding an R0 "You" hex as a centerpiece is part of the design, not an optional extra. Without R0, the operator has no seat.
- The Stage 0a deck (cards-as-rings) inherits the count. A "Cascade Deck" of 127 cards is the canonical count; a 126-card deck is a deck without the operator.

**Fix**: change "126" to "127" everywhere it appears as a hex count. The dollar coincidence at the bottom of the SOP is fine; the body should use 127.

## IV. The one reframe: ring tempo is *not* a frequency, it's a phase-lock

The analysis correctly maps rings to cadences (yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly) but treats these as **frequencies** (events per unit time). The v2 spec is more specific: each ring is a **phase-lockable ω** — a tempo at which interactions can *cohere*, not a count of interactions per week. The two are related but not identical.

- A **frequency** is a count. (How many messages per week?)
- A **phase-lock** is a coherence. (Does the relationship's natural rhythm match mine such that I can predict when I'll hear from them, and that prediction is mostly right?)

This distinction matters for the Game Crafter workflow because it changes what a "ring transition" feels like in physical play. If rings are frequencies, then promoting R5 → R4 means "I am talking to this person more often." If rings are phase-locks, then promoting R5 → R4 means "this relationship's rhythm is now coherent at a weekly tempo, even if we only talk twice a month, because the *predictability* of when we talk has stabilized."

**Reframe for cohort zero**: in the physical play, encourage cohort members to log ring transitions with a *one-line prediction note* ("I expect to hear from them every Friday morning") and to revisit the note. The prediction note is the human-readable form of the phase-lock. This makes the Game Crafter artifact legible as a *coherence* map, not a *contact count* map. The whole v2 framing depends on this distinction.

## V. What the Game Crafter can *not* host, and what to do about it

The analysis correctly identifies some boundaries; I will sharpen three:

1. **No real-time state** — The Game Crafter is a physical substrate. There is no live update. This is the same constraint as the v2 spec ("Map vs. Feed — Cascade is not a social network. It has no algorithmic feed. No posts, no stories, no notifications beyond what the user explicitly configures."). The physical substrate *is* the spec. Treat it as a feature, not a limitation.

2. **No private persistence** — A physical board can be lost, lent, photographed, forgotten. The cohort zero workflow needs a *photograph ritual* — at minimum, cohort members photograph their board at the start of each Energy Budget daily check-in. The photograph is the *real* artifact for archive purposes; the board is the *ritual* surface. The two are not the same and should not be conflated.

3. **Cohort comparison is opt-in, not default** — The Game Crafter's "side-by-side comparison" is a powerful cohort tool, but should remain *opt-in per cohort member per session*. Some pilots will want to lay their boards next to each other weekly. Some will want to never show anyone. The cohort contract should specify a default (e.g. "boards are private unless explicitly laid alongside") and let the operator override. The v2 spec's "map is personal; comparison is a feature" framing supports this; the Game Crafter SOP should adopt it explicitly.

## VI. The recommended next step

I do **not** recommend building a custom Cascade web app to replace the Game Crafter. The Game Crafter is *correct* for Phase 0a/0b. The next step is:

1. **Order one board** (tenchi's, for the cohort operator). Use 127 hexes (1 center + 6 rings of 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36), 18×24″, with the v2 warmth-band state-color palette. Cost ≈ $30-60.
2. **Order five chit sets** — one per currency — in the canonical v2 colors (Heart red, Star gold, Moon silver, Hourglass amber, Balloon blue). Cost ≈ $15 each.
3. **Run a 30-day pilot** with one other cohort member. Photograph the board daily. Log ring transitions with a one-line prediction note. Compare the two boards at the end of the pilot.
4. **At 30 days**, evaluate: did the physical substrate produce the kind of reflective state the v2 spec describes? Did the photograph ritual become a habit? Did the side-by-side comparison produce the right kind of cohort conversation (coherence comparison, not competition)?

If yes → scale to the full cohort. If no → the Game Crafter is still the right Phase 0a/0b tool, but the cohort needs a different Phase 1a/1b substrate. Either way, the Game Crafter pilot is a cheap, well-scoped, honest test of the v2 substrate in physical play. Build it.
