# 2. The Core Grammar

## 1. The Five Foci

A focus is not a territory you must conquer. In this Workbook, a **focus** is a way of asking a better question. One of the five named foci is **Field**, which examines surrounding conditions and exchange.

Anthrocybernetics uses five foci to examine a system without pretending that every system is made of the same material or obeys the same laws.

The sequence is a cycle, not a ladder. A system’s timing affects what it can receive. Its surroundings create pressure. Pressure can cross a threshold. The transition leaves a pattern. The pattern organizes pathways. Those pathways affect the next round of coordination.

### Phase — coordination and timing

**Question:** Are the components coordinated enough to function?

Phase describes timing relationships among recurring processes. In physics and biology, phase can be measured as a relationship between oscillations. Two systems may be aligned, offset, or drifting relative to one another.

For a human system, Phase may include sleep and waking, attention and recovery, speech and listening, or the rhythm of effort and rest. For an ecosystem, it may include seasonal cycles, flowering, decomposition, and pollinator activity. For a planetary system, it may include atmospheric, oceanic, orbital, and magnetospheric cycles.

Phase is not obedience. Perfect synchrony can be brittle. Healthy coordination includes enough variation to adapt.

**Observe:**

- Which rhythms repeat?
- Which rhythms support one another?
- Where does timing drift?
- Is the drift temporary, protective, or damaging?
- What would restore coordination without demanding sameness?

**Practice sentence:**

### Field — forcing and context

**Question:** What surrounds and shapes the system?

A system is open when conditions outside its boundary can affect it. A Field includes the pressures, resources, signals, constraints, and relationships crossing that boundary.

A useful Field description names the pathway:

For example:

This is more useful than saying “the environment is bad.” It tells you what is entering, where it enters, and what changes.

**Observe:**

- What enters the system?
- What leaves it?
- Which inputs are chosen, tolerated, or unavoidable?
- Which boundary is too open, too closed, or unclear?
- What evidence supports the proposed influence?

A Field is not automatically mystical. Weather, temperature, radiation, money, social expectations, noise, food, light, and information can all be fields of forcing when their pathways are specified.

### Arc — threshold and transformation

**Question:** What is accumulating, and what crosses the threshold?

Arc names a transition in which stored potential, pressure, or instability produces a rapid change in state. A lightning strike, a flare, a conflict, a creative breakthrough, and a seed germinating are not the same event. They can still share a useful structural question:

The transition may be constructive, destructive, or both. An Arc can release pressure, destroy a structure, create a new one, or expose a condition that was already present.

**Observe:**

- What was accumulating before the event?
- What threshold was crossed?
- Was the transition sudden or gradual?
- What state followed?
- What repair or reorganization did the new state require?

Do not use Arc to make every interesting moment sound electrically grand. If there was no threshold, no transition, and no changed state, you may be describing an event—not an Arc.

### Form — persistence and memory

**Question:** What pattern persists?

Form is a configuration that remains recognizable while material, energy, or information moves through it. A form may be geometric, behavioral, ecological, organizational, or cultural.

A habit is a form. A river channel is a form. A boundary around a plasma system is a form. A ritual can be a form when it preserves a sequence across time.

Form does not mean permanence. A form may persist for seconds, seasons, centuries, or geological eras. The useful questions are always temporal and material:

- How long does it last?
- What maintains it?
- What can alter it?
- What does it make easier or harder?
- What memory is encoded in the pattern?

Anthrocybernetics distinguishes four kinds of resemblance:

Only the first two support a technical fractal claim. The latter two may guide thought, but they must remain labeled as analogy or interpretation.

### Lattice — topology and propagation

**Question:** How are the parts arranged, and what can move through that arrangement?

A Lattice is the topology of a system: its nodes, pathways, bottlenecks, redundancies, and feedback loops. It determines whether a signal spreads, concentrates, gets filtered, or disappears.

A lattice may be physical, biological, social, digital, or symbolic. A mycorrhizal network, a supply chain, a set of friendships, an atmospheric circulation pattern, and a communication protocol all have topology.

**Observe:**

- Which nodes carry the most load?
- Which pathways are redundant?
- Where does flow stop?
- Who or what is missing from the map?
- Does the arrangement distribute stress or concentrate it?
- What happens when one connection fails?

A system can have high capacity and low resilience if its lattice routes everything through one fragile point. Conversely, a modest system can be resilient when it has diverse pathways and repairable connections.

## 2. The Five Scales

The Five Foci ask the same kinds of questions at different scales. The scales are not five locked boxes. They are five useful vantage points. **Field** is one focus within the set, not the name of the set itself.

### Scale 1 — Person

The person is the immediate embodied system: a body, attention, memory, behavior, and lived boundary.

Use this scale to observe:

- daily rhythms;
- attention and recovery;
- sensory and social inputs;
- thresholds of stress or creativity;
- recurring habits;
- support and bottleneck relationships.

This is the starting scale because it is the scale at which the reader can make direct observations without requiring a telescope, satellite, or institutional dataset.

### Scale 2 — Relationship

A relationship is a coupled system with at least two centers of agency. It is not a container in which one person owns the other person’s state.

Use this scale to observe:

- coordination and misalignment;
- explicit and implicit expectations;
- repair after rupture;
- recurring interaction patterns;
- reciprocal and one-sided pathways.

A relationship map must respect privacy and consent. Do not assign hidden scores to people who have not agreed to participate.

### Scale 3 — Group and organization

Groups and organizations coordinate people, resources, roles, and information over time. Their Lattice often determines whether their stated values can become actual behavior.

Use this scale to observe:

- decision tempo;
- meeting and communication rhythms;
- incentives and constraints;
- crisis thresholds;
- institutional memory;
- bottlenecks and redundancy.

An organization is not a person with a larger body. The analogy is useful only when the mechanisms are named.

### Scale 4 — Ecosystem and soil

An ecosystem is a network of organisms and physical conditions exchanging matter, energy, and information. Soil is not an inert stage; it is a layered medium containing structure, moisture, chemistry, organisms, and memory of disturbance.

Use this scale to observe:

- seasonal and daily cycles;
- temperature, moisture, nutrient, and light conditions;
- disturbance and recovery;
- persistent habitat patterns;
- roots, fungi, water paths, and species relationships.

The Workbook treats biodynamic language as interpretive unless a physical pathway and evidence are provided. Respect for ecological complexity does not require pretending that every traditional claim has been scientifically confirmed.

### Scale 5 — Planetary and cosmic weather

This scale includes planetary climate, magnetospheric and atmospheric conditions, stellar activity, local interstellar conditions, and galactic background context.

Use this scale to ask:

- What is the relevant forcing?
- What boundary mediates it?
- What is the timescale?
- What pathway connects the scales?
- What is measured, hypothesized, or symbolic?

Cosmic weather is not a personal prediction engine. A solar event may be physically real without being a demonstrated cause of a particular person’s mood, dream, or argument.

## The 5 × 5 diagnostic grid

The Five Foci and Five Scales form a matrix:

Do not attempt to answer every cell at once. Use the matrix to locate the question that matters now.

## The shared cycle

The cycle below is a description tool:

### Phase to Field

A system with a recognizable rhythm produces a signature in its surroundings. The signature may be a signal, a demand, a pattern of resource use, or a physical emission.

### Field to Arc

Forcing accumulates or interacts with a vulnerable condition until a threshold is crossed.

### Arc to Form

The transition leaves a new pattern: a memory, boundary, habit, structure, or altered regime.

### Form to Lattice

The persistent pattern organizes pathways. It tells the system what to repeat, where to route flow, and what to protect.

### Lattice to Phase

The arrangement supports or disrupts future coordination. Redundancy and repair can stabilize a system; bottlenecks and one-way flow can accelerate drift.

## The regulating cycle

The cycle also shows where regulation can occur:

- **Phase regulates Arc:** coordination can prevent chronic overactivation while allowing necessary change.
- **Arc regulates Lattice:** transformation can prevent a structure from becoming rigid.
- **Lattice regulates Field:** pathways can filter and distribute forcing.
- **Field regulates Form:** changed conditions can refresh or challenge inherited patterns.
- **Form regulates Phase:** memory can provide continuity for renewed coordination.

Every regulator can overdrive. Too much phase can become rigidity. Too much Arc can become disruption. Too much Lattice can become bureaucracy. Too much Field can become expansion without memory. Too much Form can become inherited structure that refuses adaptation.

## A complete first description

Choose one system and complete these five sentences:

That final line prevents the framework from ending in description. Anthrocybernetics is a practice of better observation followed by proportionate action.
