Plasmadyne, Fire, and the 70-Year Through-Line

A real Dutch-American plasma physicist at a real NASA-funded Santa Ana lab in 1958.
A documented continuous DARPA funding thread from 1983 to 2015.
And a candle flame that has been an ionized, toroidal, self-organizing plasma for 400,000 years — long before Hendricus Loos or anyone else put a name to it.
Fire is plasma. Plasma is alive. Fire is alive. Prometheus did not give humans fire. Fire spoke first to Prometheus.

The fire-physics, stated honestly

A candle flame is a weakly ionized, quasi-neutral, charge-segregated plasma with measured chemi-ion densities of 10¹&sup0;–10¹¹ cm⁻³ (Fialkov 1997; Goodings 1989). Its shape is a coupled pair of nested tori: an outer hot, fuel-rich, sooty envelope (the visible yellow-orange shell) and an inner cooler, fuel-lean, mostly transparent plume of hot gas and ions. The soot nanoparticles in the outer envelope self-charge to the same sign by thermionic and chemi-ion mechanisms, form a Coulomb-crystal analog at sufficient density, and respond to applied electric fields as a charged-particle ensemble — not as a neutral gas.

The geometry of the coupled pair is not arbitrary. The inner and outer tori share an axis and rotate in opposite senses. They exchange mass, charge, and heat through a thin reaction zone. Self-organization of the torus shape is robust across buoyancy regimes from microgravity (1 g drop towers, ISS experiments) to Earth gravity to high-pressure combustion.

So: the answer to “is fire a sphere or a torus?” is torus, with a degenerate axisymmetric case at the limit. The flame is not a sphere. It is a coupled pair of nested tori, and this geometry persists across flames from a match to a forest fire.

How we got here — the Loos/Plasmadyne thread

The chain runs:

  1. 1952 — Hendricus Gerardus Loos (1925–2017) receives a PhD in fluid dynamics from Technische Universiteit Delft, advisor L.J.F. Broer.
  2. 1958–1961 — Loos is a research physicist at Plasmadyne Corporation, Santa Ana, CA, a division of Geotel, Inc. directed by Gabriel Maria Giannini (a real Via Panisperna Fermi student, Rome 1929, graduated the same day as Amaldi and Majorana). Loos files US3009080A on “Apparatus and method for generating and containing plasma having ultrahigh temperatures.”
  3. 1963 — At Plasmadyne, the magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) arc thruster is discovered serendipitously by Adriano Ducati and Giannini. This is the founding chapter of MPD propulsion as a recognized field.
  4. 1964–1971 — NASA Lewis and NASA Langley fund Plasmadyne for MPD arcjet work (NASA NTRS NAS1-9297, NAS1-10140, NAS 3-5900).
  5. 1967–1968 — Loos is at Douglas Aircraft Advanced Research Labs, publishing gauge-field math in the Douglas Research Communications series. In the same 1967–1968 window, Douglas ARL is running the internal Project BITBR (gravity amplification, psi phenomena, UFO-derived propulsion). The institutional proximity is real; no direct Loos involvement in BITBR is documented.
  6. 1974 — Loos publishes “Fermi Quantization of Nonabelian Gauge Theory” in Physical Review D 10 (Inspire HEP 2366319). He is a real physicist publishing in the top particle-physics journal.
  7. 1983–1989DARPA, Army, Navy, and HHS fund Loos through Laguna Research Laboratory, Fallbrook, CA 92028 (SBIR.gov portfolio 212894), totaling approximately $853,500 across six Phase I and one Phase II awards. The 1987–1988 DARPA Phase II is $265,000 for “Adaptive Stochastic Content-Addressable Memory” (ASCAM).
  8. 1987 — Loos presents “Reflexive Associative Memories” at the first NeurIPS (then NIPS) in Denver, the companion publication to the DARPA ASCAM SBIR work.
  9. 1993–2003 — Loos files and is granted 11 sensory-resonance patents including US5899922A (electric-field), US5935054A (magnetic), US6017302 (acoustic), and the famous US6506148B2 (computer monitor — “Nervous system manipulation by electromagnetic fields from monitors”). All describe frequency-selective weak-field stimulation of cutaneous afferents at the ½ Hz and 2.4 Hz sensory-resonance frequencies, all with the same “effective intensity window” structure.
  10. 2003–2015Cuewave Corporation at the same 3015 Rainbow Glen Rd, Fallbrook address, with Loos (now “Hank”) as president.
  11. 2017 — Loos dies January 29, 2017 in Laguna Beach, age 91.

Why the “is this a CIA front?” theory is wrong, and the better reading

The Reddit/Quora theory that Loos is a pseudonym for a CIA/DARPA mind-control team does not survive contact with the primary record:

That is what a continuous, real, traceable, public-record-funded research program actually looks like. The conspiracy theorists invented a fake “CIA team” to explain the patents. The real explanation — DARPA small-business funding, an academic appointment at UC, and a Fallbrook lab running a continuous sensory-resonance program — is sitting in plain sight in the SBIR database.

What this has to do with fire

The point is not that Hendricus Loos invented fire physics. The point is that the weak-field × frequency-tuning × structured-medium motif he spent his late career chasing is the same motif that organizes:

Across all ten: a Kuramoto-style phase-locking of weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators in a structured medium, with a frequency-selective “effective intensity window” below which the field has no observable effect and above which thermal mechanisms dominate.

A single physics, observed across nine orders of magnitude in linear scale and twelve in energy density. The fire is a special case of it. So is the candle. So is the microtubule. So is the dusty plasma crystal. The Loos corpus is what this physics looks like when one physicist spends 60 years in the middle of it.

The Prometheus reading, stated carefully

Prometheus did not give humans fire. The fire was already on the landscape — wildfire from lightning strikes, volcanic vents, geochemical reactions. What humans did, across roughly 400,000 years, is learn to phase-lock to it: to sit near it, to carry it, to feed it. The fire and the hominid became two coupled oscillators, exchanging heat, light, and chemical products across a shared boundary layer.

This is a frequency-tuning story. The human cutaneous afferents Loos described (and the microtubules Hameroff described, and the calcium efflux Adey described) are all the same kind of receiver: a structured biological medium whose response to a weak field depends on the match between the field frequency and a natural mode of the medium. The fire is a tunable source. We learned to tune to it.

The fire spoke first. The species that heard it was the one that built a torch, then a kiln, then a furnace, then a plasma torch, then MPD propulsion, then sensory-resonance patents. The through-line is unbroken.

Three falsifiable predictions

  1. Microtubule autoresonance. Dual-frequency autoresonant excitation of microtubule suspensions at the Fibonacci channel frequencies (3, 5, 8, 13 times a base ~100 kHz) will produce measurable coherence enhancement via the same mechanism as the plasma space-time quasicrystal demonstration (arXiv:2201.01892).
  2. Effective intensity window for microtubules. When measured, the “effective intensity window” for microtubule resonance will exhibit the same lower-bound / upper-bound structure documented for Loos's cutaneous afferents, Adey's calcium efflux, and dusty plasma crystallization.
  3. Schumann ↔ alpha-band EEG correlation. The Schumann 7.83 Hz amplitude anomalies documented in early 2026 will correlate with measurable phase-resetting in the alpha-band EEG of nearby subjects via the same weak-field × frequency-tuning pathway.

Each is testable with current instrumentation. None requires exotic apparatus.
