# Research Note — 2026-06-02 (NIPSCO AMI workflow split)

> **Status: Confirmed-context update — worth keeping in the pilot notes**

## Confirmed facts
- NIPSCO’s AMI overview says the rollout has been underway since March 2024 and is being installed in phases for about 500,000 electric customers and 900,000 gas customers.
- NIPSCO’s electric AMI page says electric installs are typically scheduled by mail about 30 days ahead, usually take less than 15 minutes, and generally do not require entry unless the meter is inside or behind a locked gate.
- NIPSCO’s gas AMI page says gas module installs are typically scheduled by mail about 30 days ahead, usually take about 15 minutes, and usually do not require entry unless the meter is inside or behind a locked gate.
- NIPSCO’s gas AMI page also says that if a meter exchange is needed, customers are notified at least 14 days in advance, gas service is temporarily interrupted, and a relight is required.
- NIPSCO says immediate-maintenance cases may skip the letter and use a door knock and door hanger instead.
- NIOSH’s EMF manual remains the industrial-hygiene reference for occupational electric and magnetic field measurement logic.

## Practical interpretation
- AMI is not one bucket. Electric module installs, electric meter exchanges, gas module installs, gas meter exchanges, door-hanger-only visits, no-access stops, and immediate-maintenance visits should all be logged separately.
- Install duration and access behavior are workflow metadata, not exposure signals. Useful? Yes. Magical? No.
- Gas meter exchange stops are the only AMI subtype here that clearly add temporary shutoff and relight as separate field notes.

## Hypotheses
- Splitting AMI by exact workflow subtype should make route comparisons cleaner than lumping everything under generic utility work.
- Keeping notice window, access outcome, shutoff, and relight separate should reduce false joins between field operations and exposure readings.
