# Oscillator and Coherence Model

## Why V2 changed the foundation

V1 described Cascade partly through Dunbar’s number: a proposed cognitive limit on the number of relationships a person can maintain. V2 replaced that as the load-bearing premise.

V3 keeps the replacement:

> A person’s active relational capacity is dynamic and constrained by available attention, time, care, and repair capacity—not by a single fixed relationship number.

The model uses oscillator language because relationships and environments often have rhythms, amplitudes, phase relationships, and recovery dynamics. It is a working systems model, not proof that social life is literally a damped mechanical oscillator.

## The four parameters

| Symbol | Physics meaning | Anthrocybernetic working meaning |
|---|---|---|
| **ω** | Angular frequency | Interaction or forcing frequency |
| **A** | Amplitude | Intensity or depth of exchange |
| **φ** | Phase | Timing alignment or synchrony |
| **ζ** | Damping ratio | Recovery and repair behavior after disturbance |

### ω — frequency

How often does an interaction or forcing cycle occur? Cascade uses a tempo ladder from hourly and daily through weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly.

Frequency is not automatically quality. More contact can be more supportive, more expensive, or simply more noise depending on amplitude and repair conditions.

### A — amplitude

How intense is the exchange? A high-amplitude event may involve deep disclosure, crisis support, major collaboration, or a significant environmental disturbance.

Amplitude should be recorded as an observation, not treated as a moral score.

### φ — phase

Are the cycles aligned? Two people or two system components can interact frequently without being synchronized. Phase concerns timing, rhythm, and mutual adjustment.

Phase-locking is a technical term. In a relational or ecological application, use it only when the observed coordination is specified.

### ζ — damping

How quickly does a system settle after disturbance? In the working model, lower ζ means easier recovery and less forcing required to sustain a connection. The mapping is intentionally simplified.

## The causal chain

```text
compatible rhythm (ω)
        ↓
phase alignment (φ)
        ↓
coherence
        ↓
coherence + sustained amplitude (A)
        ↓
resonance
        ↓
repeated successful repair
        ↓
lower effective damping burden (ζ)
        ↓
less frequency required to remain viable
        ↓
possible ring promotion
```

The chain is a model commitment. It is not a validated universal law of human relationships.

## Three macro-traits

### Coherence

The degree of current coordination between parts of a system. In Cascade, it is reflected by direct overlap, synchrony, and reliable mutual recognition.

### Resonance

The amplification or reinforcement that occurs when coherent exchange continues over time. Resonance is a process, not a permanent status.

### Dissipation

The loss of alignment when fresh input, repair, or maintenance is absent. Dissipation is not failure; some cooling is healthy and allows a system to redistribute capacity.

## Honest-vs-functional tension

The model compresses complicated relational experience into a small vocabulary so a person can use it quickly. That makes it practical, but it does not create a physiological measurement.

“Energy” here is a functional budget metaphor for time, attention, effort, care, and recovery capacity. It should not be presented as a literal unit of body energy. The model also does not capture every important relational dimension.

In particular:

- **Asymmetric ζ matters.** One person may perform most repair work. A single shared damping value hides that pattern.
- **Strong and weak ties are different axes.** Frequency, depth, synchrony, and repair do not tell us whether a tie is bonding or bridging, as in Granovetter’s distinction.
- **Capacity fluctuates.** Illness, grief, sleep, joy, workload, and season can change available capacity.
- **A larger Cascade is not automatically better.** The goal is coherent stewardship, not maximum network size.

## A working cost expression

V2 uses an intentionally rough expression:

```text
E_rel ≈ k · A · ω · ζ
```

where `k` is a starting calibration constant, `A` is observed intensity, `ω` is observed frequency, and `ζ` is estimated repair burden.

This expression is useful as a consistent prompt for noticing tradeoffs. It is not a validated physiological equation. Do not compare scores across people as if they were standardized units.

## What ring promotion means

Promotion means a relationship or recurring connection can remain viable at a slower maintenance tempo. Demotion means the current tempo or intensity is no longer sustainable, or a rupture has increased repair burden.

Promotion should not be awarded for hitting a day count. The better question is:

> Has repeated, reciprocal exchange made the relationship easier to maintain without pretending that less contact means less value?

Demotion is not punishment. It is a capacity decision and should be communicated with care when it changes a real relationship.

## Extending oscillator language to cosmic weather

At cosmic scales, the variables must be physical rather than imported wholesale from relational practice:

- `ω` might describe a rotation, orbital, wave, or fluctuation frequency.
- `A` might describe a field, pressure, radiation, or density amplitude.
- `φ` might describe phase relationships between measured time series.
- `ζ` might describe damping, relaxation, or recovery after a perturbation.

The symbols are reusable; the units, instruments, equations, and meanings are scale-specific. A solar flare and a difficult conversation can both be called threshold events in a broad systems comparison, but they are not the same phenomenon.

## Research questions

1. Can a simple longitudinal log distinguish frequency from intensity and repair burden?
2. Does reported capacity predict chosen ring transitions without being used as a moral score?
3. How should asymmetric repair be represented for dyads and groups?
4. What observable physical variables support oscillator models in each cosmic-weather segment?
5. Which cross-scale relationships show phase coupling after controlling for shared drivers?

## Safe summary

The Oscillator Model is valuable as a disciplined way to ask about rhythm, intensity, synchrony, and recovery. It becomes misleading when metaphor is presented as a hidden biological meter or when the same variables are assumed to have identical units from soil to star.
