## Scope and selection rationale

The prior N05_E18 notes covered modern and historical water-quality, transport, utility, energy, population, and environmental-regulation paths, but the historical search envelope still lacked a page-verified pre-industrial/early-colonial source and a reproducible modern hydrologic crosswalk around the working anchor. This run therefore searched both sides inward without duplicating the completed WQP/USGS anomaly work:

1. **Historical end:** inspect the 1882 Internet Archive scan *Counties of Porter and Lake, Indiana: Historical and Biographical* for dated waterway, Indigenous, trade, portage, and early road observations.
2. **Modern end:** query the current USGS Network Linked Data Index (NLDI) at the Merrillville anchor for the machine-readable flowline, hydrolocation, basin, and linked WQP/NWIS site context.

The source footprints are not equivalent. The archival item is a county-level retrospective history; the NLDI results describe a point, a local reach, a derived basin polygon, and linked monitoring sites. None is a cell-wide measurement.

### B. Waterway and landscape observations, printed pp. 12–13

The source describes Lake Michigan along the northern shore, the Kankakee River to the south, several inland lakes, and the Calumet River flowing westward through the northern part of Porter County. It also describes a watershed divide near the center of Porter County. These are direct observations of what the 1882 author presents as local geography, not a modern hydrologic measurement and not a claim that the 1882 boundary matches `N05_E18`.

### C. Early colonial movement, trade, and Indigenous presence, printed pp. 14–16

The historical narrative reports that French missionaries and explorers traveled through the region in the seventeenth century; it places Marquette’s 1673 route through the Kankakee and a portage to the St. Joseph, and describes 1712 French–Indigenous military cooperation, later British and Spanish claims, and Pottawatomy participation in the 1763 capture of the St. Joseph post during the Pontiac uprising. The source uses broad and dated political language but does not provide a population count, treaty text, Indigenous-authored account, or systematic evidence of the full cell’s political geography.

The same section reports a 1803 passage by Whistler’s troops toward Fort Dearborn, a 1804 completion date for the fort, travel trails that became regular roads, native trapping and hunting around the Calumet and Kankakee, corn brought to the fort, and canoe and pack-pony transport. On printed p. 16 it reports the 1812 Fort Dearborn conflict, the fort’s rebuilding in 1816, Joseph Bailly’s 1822 settlement and trade with Native people, and a road cleared from Detroit to Fort Dearborn in 1831.

### D. Bailly Town and source-bias observation, printed pp. 20–21

The source describes Bailly Town as a rendezvous for Native gatherings, trade, and religious activity rather than a settlement with a large resident population. It also states that the location lost importance after Native people left for western reservations. This is useful evidence that the author perceived the place as a trade and gathering node, but the latter statement is a settler-era retrospective and is not treated as a complete account of removal, treaty history, continuity, or Indigenous agency.

The USGS NLDI `comid/position` endpoint returned a GeoJSON feature for the Merrillville anchor. It assigns the point to NHDPlus COMID `3399712`. The response geometry is a local flowline, and its properties include the navigation URL for that COMID.

The NLDI basin endpoint returned one GeoJSON polygon for COMID `3399712`. The result is a hydrologic network crosswalk, not a political, ecological, or fixed-grid boundary. The same COMID’s navigation queries returned linked WQP and NWIS locations upstream and downstream. Examples include downstream WQP locations `USGS-413303087142701`, `INSTOR_WQX-15694`, `USGS-412910087201101`, and `USGS-412945087200701`, and downstream NWIS locations including `USGS-04092990`, `USGS-04092975`, `USGS-04093000`, and `USGS-04092977`. ## Source interpretation

The two evidence ends converge on a narrower and defensible claim: `N05_E18` contains a historically documented water-and-transport corridor whose modern working anchor can be placed on a named USGS/NHDPlus flowline and connected to a discoverable network of WQP/NWIS sites. The historical account supplies dated movement, trade, portage, road, and institutional anchors; the NLDI supplies a reproducible modern geography for selecting and ordering subsequent water observations.

The evidence does **not** show that the historical route, the modern flowline, and the fixed 24 × 24 cell are the same object. It also does not establish that the historical narrative’s broad terms describe all Indigenous communities, all political relationships, or the whole Great Lakes pilot.
