## Scope and selection

The previous run re-checked the 2022 Water Quality Portal/USGS dissolved-oxygen discrepancy and preserved the result as unresolved. The next unresolved N05_E18 bridge target was the missing population/settlement and infrastructure sequence: a page-checked early transport anchor, a dated industrial-utility anchor, and a current structured population endpoint. This run searched both ends inward without treating these different source footprints as equivalent.

**Observation:** T. H. Ball’s county history describes the Michigan Central Railroad track reaching Chicago through the northern sand hills of Lake County and states that the railroad was completed in 1850. It reports a station on Deep River, south of the Calumet, named Lake, and describes rail and telegraph connection to the Atlantic seaboard. The same passage contrasts this with earlier movement of local produce to Chicago by ox and horse teams.

### B. 1907 Gary municipal waterworks and steel-mill service

**Observation 1:** Morris Thompson, F. L. Burkholder, and G. P. Laubach’s 1907 design report for Gary states that the proposed distribution system used 125 gallons per capita per day for an estimated population of 40,000 twenty years hence, yielding a domestic requirement of 5,000,000 gallons per 24 hours. It separately calculated 960,000 gallons for sixteen fire streams and a total system demand of 5,960,000 gallons per day. The report calls the estimate a close approximation.

**Observation 2:** The report states that, in addition to pipes supplying Gary proper, a 10-inch pipe was carried across the Calumet River to the steel mills. The page contains the pipe-size statement and tabulated flow figures; it does not identify a measured delivered volume to the mills.

### C. 2024 Merrillville population endpoint

**Observation:** U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts reports a July 1, 2024 population estimate of **36,989** for Merrillville town, Indiana, and a 2020 estimates base of **36,444** in the V2024 display. QuickFacts is a place-level endpoint for the working human anchor, not a population total for the full N05_E18 cell or the Great Lakes octagon.

## Source interpretation

The historical sources support a bounded sequence in which rail and telegraph access were described as changing Lake County’s connection to Atlantic markets in 1850, and a Gary municipal waterworks design in 1907 explicitly linked public water infrastructure to projected population and steel-mill service. The modern Census endpoint supplies a current anchor-place population estimate. This is evidence of transport, utility planning, industrial coupling, and settlement measurement at different scales—not proof that rail caused industrial concentration, that the 1907 projection was realized, or that Merrillville’s current population represents the whole sector.

The 1873 source is a retrospective county history and may compress or frame events through the author’s local perspective. The 1907 document is a design proposal, not an as-built performance audit. QuickFacts is a place-level modeled estimate and is not directly comparable to the 1907 projected population or the 1873 narrative. These limitations are retained rather than normalized away.
