## Scope and selection

This run continues the Great Lakes pilot rather than expanding globally. It follows the prior note’s next-search path: investigate the anomalous preliminary dissolved-oxygen result at `USGS-05536356`, and add an independent historical source for transport, waterway modification, and the pre-Gary regional transition. It does not duplicate the prior 1956 Gary Works extraction; the Gary publication remains a related source already documented in `2026-08-06-N05_E18-1956-gary-works-wqp-profile.md`.

The fixed cell spans latitude 37.5–45.0°N and longitude 90–75°W (the sector record stores the equivalent 0–360° longitude bounds 270–285°). The historical sources describe Lake County, the Calumet Region, Lake Station/East Gary, Liverpool, Dyer, and connected waterways. The WQP and USGS records describe a monitoring point at the Grand Calumet River at Columbia Avenue in Hammond. None is an area-weighted observation for the full cell.

What can be stated, with page/item-level provenance, about (1) historical waterway and transport connectivity relevant to the N05_E18 corridor and (2) the apparent 2022 WQP oxygen anomaly when compared with same-site USGS continuous data?

## Raw observations

### A. Historical waterway and settlement context, 1834–1854

The Internet Archive scan **From Lake Station To East Gary**, prepared by the East Gary American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and edited by Susan Christianson, records local historical claims and reproduces earlier recollections. The item metadata dates the publication to 1976; its narrative covers earlier periods and cites local sources. The scan is OCR-assisted and page images were checked for the bounded passages below.

1. **PDF pp. 5–6, section “Liverpool”:** the source states that, at the time Liverpool was laid out, the Calumet and Deep Rivers were navigable for vessels of good size to that point. It then says both had later been obstructed, “especially the Calumet,” by draining Cady Marsh, which had caused sand to fill the channel. It records a ferry on the Calumet in 1834 and a hotel opened in 1835. This is a local historical narrative, not a measured channel-depth series. The source itself gives no exact navigability date beyond the surrounding settlement context.
2. **PDF p. 6, section “Lake Station”:** the source states that the Michigan Central Railroad was completed through northern Lake County in 1851, following an older Indian trail and reaching a location associated with trails toward Chicago. It says George Earle recorded the Lake Station town site on April 1, 1852.
3. **PDF p. 7, section “Lake Station”:** the source states that Michigan Central erected a depot containing freight, express, and telegraph offices, and that the Michigan Central, Lake Shore, and Joliet and Northern Indiana railroads occupied the transportation field in northern Lake County. It characterizes Old Lake Station as the most important shipping point in Lake County “for a number of years.” The source further records that a railroad post office was established on October 21, 1851.
4. **PDF p. 7, same section:** the source states that U.S. Steel began platting and building Gary in 1906, and that William Earle founded and platted East Gary on May 5, 1908. This is a local historical account and is retained as a dated narrative claim, not as an independently audited corporate land record.

### B. Historical corroboration and boundary context, 1850–1959

The Internet Archive item **Reports And Papers Of Lake County Indiana (1958–1966)**, created by the Lake County Public Library and containing historical papers, provides a separate local-history compilation.

1. **PDF p. 7, printed page 7, “History of Lake County”:** the source states that in 1850 the Michigan Central crossed Lake County, giving new growth to the area, and that mail was transported daily from Lake Station (identified in the passage as now East Gary) to Crown Point.
2. **PDF p. 66, printed page 52, “History of Lake County”:** the source states that the Michigan Central, also called the Joliet cutoff in the passage, extended from Lake Station through Dyer to Joliet, Illinois. It reports that Aaron N. Hart purchased about 15,000 acres near Dyer, including much of the old Cady Marsh, and connects subsequent development to drainage and settlement. The 15,000-acre statement is a source-reported narrative quantity; it is not converted into a fixed-cell land-use measure.
3. **PDF p. 7, printed page 7:** the source states that Lake County’s population was “less than ten thousand” at the time discussed around the Civil War and that at least 1,000 men were estimated to have enlisted. These are historical narrative estimates with unclear exact reference date and are not used as a population series.

### D. Same-site USGS continuous record on 2022-08-30

A USGS Water Services instantaneous-value request for site `05536356`, parameter code `00300`, date `2022-08-30`, returned a dissolved-oxygen series with **78 quarter-hour values**. The returned unit is `mg/L`; the series variable is **“Dissolved oxygen, water, unfiltered, mg/L”**; the variable code is `00300`; and the series carries the `A` qualifier on the inspected values.

At the times bracketing the WQP discrete sample, the continuous series reports:

The continuous record is not the same observation design as the WQP discrete sample: it is a probe-based instantaneous series, while the WQP row is a discrete multiple-vertical sample. Nevertheless, the two same-site records differ by roughly two orders of magnitude at nearly the same time. This establishes a **source-record discrepancy requiring further verification**, not proof that the WQP value is erroneous.

The USGS project page states that USGS, in cooperation with IDEM and EPA, began continuous probe-based dissolved-oxygen and temperature measurements at 13 Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Canal Area of Concern sites in spring 2021, and lists `05536356` among the monitored locations. The project page describes the data purpose and site network but does not itself correct the 674 mg/L row.

## Source interpretation

- The historical sources converge on a corridor mechanism involving waterways, marsh drainage, Indian trails, railroads, mail, freight, and town-site formation in northern Lake County. This is a **related historical interpretation**, not a cell-wide measured connectivity index.
- The two historical compilations are local-history sources with different publication dates and retrospective layers. Their agreement on the Michigan Central/Lake Station connection is corroboration of a reported historical narrative, not independent engineering measurement.
- The historical waterway account describes navigability and later obstruction qualitatively. It does not justify assigning a numeric water constraint, and it does not establish that marsh drainage caused all later channel change.
