## Scope and selection

This run continues the Great Lakes pilot rather than expanding globally. It follows the prior note’s next-search path: resolve the anomalous Water Quality Portal oxygen row through the USGS source record and add an independent historical transport/waterway anchor from Internet Archive material. The historical source is a later local-history compilation reporting earlier events; it is not treated as a contemporaneous survey or as a cell-wide measurement.

The fixed `N05_E18` cell spans 37.5–45.0°N and 90–75°W. The historical passages concern Lake Station/East Gary, Liverpool, Dyer, and the Calumet corridor; the modern water observations concern a single Grand Calumet River monitoring location. These footprints are related to, but not equivalent with, the fixed cell.

## Raw observations

### A. Internet Archive: Lake Station / East Gary historical compilation

The Internet Archive item **From Lake Station To East Gary**, identifier `from-lake-station-to-east-gary-images`, was published in 1976 by the East Gary American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, edited by Susan Christianson. Its catalog metadata describes a 44-page local-history publication with OCR and a scanned PDF.

The following bounded observations were extracted from the OCR derivative and checked against the rendered scan pages:

1. **PDF p. 5–6, historical account of Liverpool:** the source says that, at the time Liverpool was laid out, the Calumet and Deep Rivers were navigable by vessels of “good size” to that point. It then states that both rivers were later obstructed, especially the Calumet, by draining Cady Marsh and resulting sand accumulation in the channel. The source also records a ferry on the Calumet in 1834 and a hotel opened in 1835. This is a local historical account with cited reminiscence/history references; it is a qualitative observation, not a measured channel-depth or flow series.
2. **PDF p. 6–7, 1851–1854 railroad anchor:** the source states that the Michigan Central Railroad was completed through northern Lake County in 1851; that its alignment followed an older Indian trail and connected a terminal point at the future Lake Station to routes toward Chicago; that George Earle recorded the Lake Station town site on April 1, 1852; and that the Michigan Central constructed a depot containing freight, express, and telegraph offices. It further states that the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad reached Joliet in 1854.
3. **PDF p. 7, shipping-point interpretation reported by the source:** the source states that while Lake Shore, Michigan Central, and Joliet and Northern Indiana railroads controlled transportation in northern Lake County, “Old Lake Station held the name of being the most important shipping point in Lake County.” This wording is preserved as the publication’s historical claim; it is not converted into a tonnage rank.
4. **PDF p. 7, industrial settlement anchor:** the source states that U.S. Steel began platting and building Gary in 1906 and that William Earle founded and platted East Gary on May 5, 1908, as a suburb outside Gary for clerical and professional workers associated with steel and other industries. The publication gives the new community’s area as `6,542.92 acre` (source typography preserved in substance). This is a dated local-history claim about town development and stated industrial linkage, not an independent employment or land-use dataset.
5. **PDF p. 5, Indigenous and pre-industrial context:** the source reports Pottawatomi presence in the Lake Station/East Gary area, including an Indian settlement, cemetery, hunting/trapping, and a trail later commemorated by a marker. The statements are local-history recollections and require Indigenous-authored or primary corroboration before being used to characterize Indigenous lifeways or displacement.

### B. Internet Archive: Lake County historical compilation cross-check

The Internet Archive item **Reports And Papers Of Lake County Indiana (1958–1966)**, identifier `reportsandpapersoflakecountyindiana`, was published by the Lake County Public Library / Historical Association of Lake County, Indiana. The scan metadata describes a 1966-era collection; the PDF’s title/copyright pages identify the volume as a local historical association publication with material spanning the stated period.

Page-level observations checked against the PDF text layer:

1. **PDF p. 12 / printed p. 7, railroad:** the history section states that the Michigan Central crossed Lake County in 1850 and that daily mail thereafter traveled from Lake Station, identified as present-day East Gary. It also states that the Michigan Central, referred to as the Joliet cutoff in the passage, extended from Lake Station through Dyer to Joliet, Illinois.
2. **PDF p. 72 / printed p. 66, drainage and agricultural-commercial linkage:** the source states that the Michigan Central/Joliet cutoff was completed shortly after a 1852 state drainage act and describes land purchases around Dyer that included much of old Cady Marsh. It records a grain elevator constructed on Michigan Central property in Dyer in 1858. The passage ties railroad, marsh drainage, land settlement, and grain commerce in a specific Dyer-area historical account; it does not provide a sector-wide production series.
3. **PDF p. 13 / printed p. 8, population anchor:** the history section states that Lake County’s population was “less than ten thousand” around the Civil War and that at least one thousand men were estimated to have enlisted. The phrase is a bounded historical statement with an approximate population category, not an exact census value and not a `N05_E18` cell population.

The two Archive.org sources partially corroborate the railroad and corridor sequence, but both are retrospective local-history publications and do not substitute for railroad company records, census tables, engineering surveys, or Indigenous-authored/primary records.

### C. USGS source verification of the WQP oxygen anomaly

The previous WQP result file for exact site `USGS-05536356` reported this row:

A same-site USGS Water Services instantaneous-value query for parameter `00300` on 2022-08-30 returned a continuous dissolved-oxygen series at 15-minute intervals. Near the WQP sample time, the series reports:

- `2022-08-30T07:30:00-04:00`: `6.8 mg/l`, qualifier `A`
- `2022-08-30T07:45:00-04:00`: `6.7 mg/l`, qualifier `A`

The query returned 78 values for that date, from midnight through 23:45 local time. The continuous values are not the same observation design as the multiple-vertical discrete sample, and the query does not itself establish which record should be corrected. However, the adjacent same-site values create a documented **source discrepancy**: `674 mg/l` is incompatible with the nearby reported `6.8` and `6.7 mg/l` values by two orders of magnitude.

The USGS National Field Manual search material explains that multiple-vertical and equal-width/equal-discharge methods are cross-sectional sampling methods intended to represent stream conditions, but this methodological context does not resolve whether the WQP row contains a transcription, unit, processing, or source-data error. The underlying USGS processing history, quality-control record, or corrected discrete record was not located in this run.

## Source interpretation

- The historical sources document a plausible corridor sequence: navigable waterways and ferry movement in the 1830s, railroad and telegraph integration in the 1850s, grain and drainage-linked settlement around Dyer, and steel-centered suburban/industrial development around Gary and East Gary in the early twentieth century.
- These observations support a **qualitative infrastructure-connectivity context** for the Great Lakes pilot. They do not establish a cell-wide transport density, production total, waterway capacity, or causal relationship between water conditions and industrialization.
- The USGS comparison materially improves the handling of the WQP anomaly: it confirms that the anomalous row is a reported preliminary observation with a named method and source identifier, while nearby same-site continuous records report ordinary single-digit dissolved-oxygen values. It does not authorize replacing `674` with `6.8`, deleting the row, or assigning a clean-water classification.
