# N05_E18 Great Lakes pilot: 1834–1956 transport history and 2022 WQP anomaly verification

## Scope and selection

This run continues the Great Lakes pilot and does not expand globally. It follows the prior note’s first next-search item: verify the anomalous Water Quality Portal row reporting dissolved oxygen of `674 mg/l` at `USGS-05536356` on 2022-08-30. It also follows the SOP’s historical-end procedure by adding a distinct Archive.org source-family search for transport, waterway, settlement, and industrial-transition anchors in the 1800–1950 band.

The modern verification compares two different USGS delivery products for the same station and date: the WQP discrete result and the USGS continuous instantaneous-value series. The historical evidence comes from a local history scan, not from a cell-wide census or engineering inventory. None of these sources is treated as a direct measurement of the whole fixed sector.

Does the source record support retaining the 2022 dissolved-oxygen value as a usable environmental observation, and what bounded historical evidence connects the Calumet/Lake County corridor’s waterways, trails, railroads, and settlement to the later Gary industrial context?

### B. USGS continuous dissolved-oxygen values on the same date

The USGS Water Services instantaneous-value response for site `05536356`, parameter code `00300`, and date `2022-08-30` returned a continuous series labeled **Dissolved oxygen, water, unfiltered, mg/L**. The response contained 78 quarter-hour values for that day. At the times bracketing the WQP sample, the reported values were:

These values are about 100 times lower than the WQP row’s `674 mg/l`. The continuous series is not the same sampling design as the multiple-vertical discrete sample, so it does not prove which value is correct. It does establish a strong source-level inconsistency that must block unqualified use of `674` in a derived profile.

### C. USGS monitoring-program context

The USGS project page states that, in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USGS began collecting continuous probe-based dissolved-oxygen and water-temperature measurements at 13 sites in the Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Canal Area of Concern in spring 2021. The page lists `05536356` as a Grand Calumet River site with dissolved oxygen, temperature, discharge, gage height, specific conductance, pH, fluorescence, turbidity, and related monitoring fields.

This explains why a continuous record exists for comparison, but it does not adjudicate the discrete row or establish a sector average.

### D. Historical waterway and transport observations, 1834–1908

The Internet Archive scan **From Lake Station To East Gary** was published in 1976 by the East Gary American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and the Lake County Public Library. Its history section preserves locally attributed observations and earlier source references. The following page-level passages were located in OCR and checked against rendered scan pages:

1. **PDF p. 5, “History of East Gary”:** the account describes a Pottawatomi village near what later became Lake Station/East Gary and refers to hunting and trapping in the surrounding region, including the vicinity of Liverpool and Glen Park. The passage is a later local-history compilation, not an independently verified population count.
2. **PDF pp. 5–6, “Liverpool”:** the account says that in the period of early settlement the Calumet and Deep Rivers were navigable for vessels of good size to Liverpool, and that a ferry was placed on the Calumet in 1834 with a hotel opened in 1835. It also states that the Calumet was later obstructed, especially after the draining of Cady Marsh caused sand to fill the channel. The source’s wording is preserved as a historical report; the hydrologic mechanism requires engineering or map corroboration.
3. **PDF pp. 6–7, “Lake Station”:** the account dates completion of the Michigan Central Railroad through northern Lake County to 1851, describes its relationship to an older Indian trail and two routes toward Chicago, and says George Earle recorded the Lake Station town site on April 1, 1852. It reports that Michigan Central built a depot containing freight, express, and telegraph offices, and that by 1854 the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad reached Joliet.
4. **PDF p. 7:** the source reports that Lake Shore, Michigan Central, and Joliet and Northern Indiana railroads made Old Lake Station “the most important shipping point in Lake County” for a period. This is a local historical characterization, not a tonnage series.
5. **PDF p. 7:** the source reports that U.S. Steel began platting and building Gary in 1906, and that East Gary was platted on May 5, 1908 as a suburb for clerical and professional workers connected to steel and other industries. It gives the East Gary area as 6,542.92 acres. This is a local-history account of settlement and industrial adjacency; the area figure and corporate chronology need independent cadastral or corporate corroboration before use in a score.

### E. Cross-check from Lake County historical papers

The Internet Archive scan **Reports And Papers Of Lake County Indiana (1958–1966)** contains a historical overview that dates the Michigan Central’s crossing of Lake County to 1850, identifies daily mail service from Lake Station (later East Gary) to Crown Point, and describes the Joliet cutoff through Dyer. Its chronology differs by one year from the East Gary compilation’s 1851 date. The discrepancy is recorded rather than resolved by choosing one value.

The same scan reports that Lake County had a population of less than 10,000 in the Civil War-era passage, but this county-level historical statement is not a value for N05_E18 and is not converted into a cell population estimate.

## Source interpretation

- The WQP row is a valid record of what the portal transmitted: a preliminary dissolved-oxygen result of `674 mg/l` from a routine multiple-vertical sample. Its preliminary status and conflict with the same-day continuous series prevent treating it as a validated environmental condition.
- The USGS continuous series provides a same-site, same-date comparison near the sample time: `6.8` and `6.7 mg/L`. Because the sampling designs differ, the comparison is a discrepancy check, not a substitution rule.
- USGS parameter-code documentation and field-method literature identify multiple-vertical sampling as a cross-sectional collection method; that method context does not explain the magnitude discrepancy. A method record, laboratory/processing record, or corrected source row is still needed.
- The historical sources support a bounded interpretation of the corridor as a changing water-and-transport interface: early waterways and ferry movement, then rail and telegraph integration, then industrial-city and suburban formation. They do not support a cell-wide production, population, or water-quality value.
- The East Gary compilation dates the Michigan Central event to 1851; the Lake County historical overview says 1850. This is a period-anchor conflict, not evidence that one source should be silently discarded.
