# 1. Core Thesis: Civilizations as Climate-Corridor Systems

## The central claim

The Macro-Culture project asks whether broad civilizational patterns are better understood through **climate corridors and energy gradients** than through political borders alone.

A nation-state map tells us who governs a territory. A macro-cultural map asks:

- What solar and seasonal regime does this place share with other places?
- What resources and constraints recur across the same latitude band?
- Which neighboring regions compete for similar goods?
- Which distant regions possess complementary resources?
- What technologies and institutions emerge in response?
- How do those arrangements change when an energy regime changes?

This is a working hypothesis, not a settled law of history.

## The proposed grid

The original model divides Earth into a regular grid:

Each sector is treated as a possible **macro-cultural fingerprint**. The grid is a simplifying instrument: it makes comparison possible, but it does not replace local geography, historical sources, or cultural specificity.

The current prototype uses a 24-column × 48-row visualization grid for finer latitude resolution. That implementation discrepancy is unresolved; the conceptual 24 × 24 grid remains the canonical thesis model until the geometry is formally reconciled.

## Directional pressure 1: latitudinal competition

Regions at similar latitudes often share portions of a solar, seasonal, agricultural, and atmospheric regime. This can produce similar needs and therefore competition for:

- comparable food and raw materials;
- river basins and transport routes;
- labor and settlement space;
- mineral and energy sources;
- strategic access to ports, passes, and corridors.

The thesis shorthand is:

This does not mean that all same-latitude societies behave alike. Geography, institutions, technology, and history can produce radically different outcomes under similar conditions.

## Directional pressure 2: longitudinal adaptation and exchange

Regions at different latitudes can possess complementary resources and production conditions. Trade and dependency may therefore develop along meridian or north–south corridors:

- tropical biological products and crops;
- temperate grains and manufactured goods;
- northern timber, minerals, and energy;
- coastal, riverine, and maritime transport;
- labor, capital, and technological services.

The shorthand is:

The memorable formulation is: **we compete sideways and adapt up-down.** It is a framing device, not a universal rule.

## Macro-culture as interaction

The project rejects a simple environmental-determinist model:

A sector can be resource-rich but politically fragile, environmentally constrained but technologically adaptive, or stable enough that old solutions become unquestioned traditions.

## What the thesis could explain

If supported by comparative work, the model might help organize questions about:

- why some resource corridors become extraction zones;
- why some climate belts develop recurring rivalries;
- why water, transport, and energy infrastructure create durable political centers;
- why technological solutions can become institutions and later liabilities;
- how climate migration shifts competition toward new latitudinal bands;
- how future energy grids may follow resource and transmission corridors rather than existing borders.

It should not be used to infer a society's character from location alone.
