## 2.6 Empirical Anchor — Hippocampal Ripples as Precision-Weighting Operators (Frank et al. 2026)

In June 2026, **Frank, Strange, Friston et al.** published the strongest empirical anchor the framework has received to date. *Human hippocampal ripples tune cortical responses based on predicted uncertainty*, Nature Neuroscience, doi:10.1038/s41593-026-02345-6.

**Setup:** Intracranial recordings from 17 epilepsy patients with depth electrodes in hippocampus + occipital cortex + fusiform gyrus. Patients performed a visuomotor mapping task where the probability distribution of colored shapes varied across blocks, yielding trials of varying entropy (uncertainty) and surprise.

**Key findings:**

1. **Pre-stimulus ripple rate scales with entropy, not surprise.** ~2× ripple count in high-entropy (1.7–1.9 bit) trials during the −800 to −400 ms window. Ripple duration also grows with entropy.
2. **Pre-stimulus ripples suppress occipital gamma.** The ripple is preparing cortex by lowering its baseline, not driving it.
3. **Pre-stimulus ripples shift fusiform E/I toward inhibition** (FOOOF aperiodic exponent analysis). Gain-down, gate-tight.
4. **Surprise responses are faster, sharper, shorter-latency when a pre-stimulus ripple occurred.** Fusiform gamma ~200 ms shorter latency; reaction times faster on ripple-present trials.
5. **Directed gamma flow fusiform → hippocampus at 150–650 ms post-stimulus** — the prediction error feeds back upstream.
