What this paper proves

Direct intracranial recordings from human epilepsy patients show that hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) are precision-weighting operators, not memory-replay events:

  1. Pre-stimulus ripple rate scales with upcoming entropy, not surprise — ~2× more ripples in high-entropy trials at −800 to −400 ms
  2. Pre-stimulus ripples suppress occipital gamma — preparing cortex by lowering its baseline
  3. Pre-stimulus ripples shift fusiform E/I toward inhibition (FOOOF aperiodic exponent analysis) — gain-down, gate-tight
  4. Surprise responses are 200 ms shorter-latency when preceded by a ripple — reaction times faster
  5. Directed gamma flow fusiform → hippocampus at 150–650 ms post-stimulus — prediction-error feedback up the hierarchy
