# 26. Information, Meaning, and Signal Translation

## From difference to significance

### Purpose

Bridge information theory, semiotics, language, ritual, symbolic form, and Anthrocybernetics' concern with translation across layers.

### Central question

> What changes when a physical difference becomes information, when information becomes meaning, and when meaning becomes action?

## Proposed sections

1. **Information is not meaning** — uncertainty reduction, structure, relevance, and interpretation.
2. **Signal and channel** — encoding, noise, bandwidth, redundancy, latency, and loss.
3. **Signs and reference** — icon, index, symbol, convention, and context.
4. **Translation across systems** — what survives when a bodily, ecological, or social process becomes language or data.
5. **Compression and forgetting** — summaries, memory, omission, and the productive role of Lethe.
6. **Narrative as control surface** — how descriptions alter attention, coordination, and behavior.
7. **Measurement and category** — how a label makes some features visible and others disappear.
8. **Responsible translation** — provenance, uncertainty, authorization, and feedback from the represented system.

## Five-Foci sketch

- **Phase:** timing, sequence, update, delay, and historical context.
- **Field:** sender, receiver, channel, code, power, and shared assumptions.
- **Arc:** detection, encoding, interpretation, decision, and revision.
- **Form:** symbol, map, model, story, database, and institution.
- **Lattice:** signal paths, translators, archives, gatekeepers, and affected communities.

## Practice

Take one event and represent it three ways: a timestamped observation, a structured data record, and a short narrative. Compare what each representation preserves, omits, and makes actionable.

## Evidence boundary

A metaphorical translation can be illuminating without being a causal model. Shannon information does not by itself explain consciousness, value, truth, or wisdom. Keep channel properties separate from interpretive significance.

## Open questions

- Can a translation preserve uncertainty rather than laundering it into confidence?
- When does compression become distortion?
- How do symbols coordinate groups and also produce exclusion?
- What would a provenance-preserving language for living systems look like?
