# 9. The Oscillator Lens

The Daily Three becomes more precise when you can distinguish four properties of an active process:

- **tempo** — how often the process repeats;
- **intensity** — how much attention, effort, emotion, risk, or resource it requires;
- **synchrony** — how well relevant processes coordinate;
- **repair burden** — how much recovery or correction follows.

These are descriptive dimensions. They do not turn a life into a laboratory instrument by themselves. Physical oscillator notation may be useful in a technical research context, but this Workbook does not assign human relational measurements to symbols or coefficients.

## Tempo

Tempo is how often an interaction, demand, or cycle repeats within the chosen time window.

Examples:

- a message thread that renews every few minutes;
- a weekly meeting;
- a seasonal migration;
- a recurring repair conversation;
- a solar or planetary cycle.

A high tempo is not automatically costly. A frequent exchange can be easy when it is predictable and low-intensity. A rare exchange can be expensive when it requires major preparation or recovery.

## Intensity

Intensity is the amount of attention, emotion, effort, risk, or resource involved in one exchange or cycle.

Intensity is contextual. A ten-minute conversation may be more intense than a three-hour routine task. State what kind of intensity you mean.

## Synchrony

Synchrony is the degree to which coupled processes are aligned in timing, expectation, or response.

A relationship may have high affection and low synchrony. A team may have high synchrony around a deadline and low synchrony around priorities. An ecosystem may have seasonal processes that are normally coordinated but drift under changed conditions.

Use a qualitative scale until you have a reason to measure more formally:

## Damping and repair burden

Damping describes how much a system resists oscillation or how quickly activity settles. In the relational protocol, `ζ` is used as a functional estimate of repair difficulty and recovery burden.

A connection with high repair burden may require:

- repeated clarification;
- emotional recovery;
- logistical coordination;
- rebuilding trust;
- extra time after contact;
- protection from recurring rupture.

Treat repair burden as a slow observation, not a momentary feeling. A single difficult day should not permanently redefine a relationship. A sustained pattern of one-sided repair should not be hidden by a falsely shared score.

For asymmetric relationships, keep two notes:

Do not collapse unequal work into a single score or summary label.

## The qualitative load model

Use the four dimensions to describe a connection without calculating it. Ask:

- Is the load high because of intensity, tempo, repair, or all three?
- Which dimension could change with the least harm?
- Does the description hold across repeated observations?
- What information would disconfirm my interpretation?

This is a **functional budget model**, not a claim that relationships have a directly measurable energy quantity equivalent to joules, calories, or electrical power. No coefficient or product is supplied because the Workbook does not define validated units or a measurement procedure for human relational load.

## Symmetric simplification and asymmetric reality

A simple worksheet may treat repair burden as if both sides share one `ζ`. That is a deliberate simplification for quick reflection.

Real relationships may be asymmetric:

- one person initiates most repair;
- one person bears most uncertainty;
- one person has more power to end or delay contact;
- one person has greater access to time, money, or institutional support.

When asymmetry matters, separate the estimates. A model that hides unequal burden is not neutral; it is inaccurate.

## Practice: calibrate one variable

Choose one active commitment. For seven days, change only one variable if possible.

If the result is unclear, keep the uncertainty. Do not improve the story by inventing precision.

## The cosmic translation

At cosmic scales, oscillation and phase are physical descriptions with specific variables and instruments. At human scales, the Workbook uses the underlying questions without importing physical units or equations.

The bridge is strongest when we preserve the distinction:

The shared vocabulary organizes attention. It does not prove that a human relationship is governed by the same equation as a plasma wave.
