# 7. Lattice: Map the Connections

> A system’s resilience is written not only in its parts, but in the paths between them.

A **Lattice** is the arrangement of nodes, pathways, bottlenecks, feedback loops, and redundancies through which energy, matter, or information moves.

The term is borrowed from physical descriptions of ordered arrangements, but Anthrocybernetics uses it as a cross-scale systems lens. A lattice can be physical, biological, social, organizational, digital, or ecological. The mechanism must be named at the scale being studied.

## The grounded idea

Network topology affects propagation. A signal may spread across many pathways, concentrate at a hub, be blocked by a boundary, or disappear when a single connection fails.

Useful lattice properties include:

- **connectivity:** which nodes can reach one another;
- **centrality:** which nodes carry disproportionate flow;
- **redundancy:** whether alternate routes exist;
- **bottleneck:** where flow is constrained;
- **feedback:** whether outputs return as inputs;
- **modularity:** whether parts can function semi-independently;
- **repairability:** how easily a failed path can be restored.

The presence of many connections does not guarantee resilience. A dense network can spread a disturbance quickly. A sparse network can be robust when it has clear boundaries and alternate routes.

## Practice: draw a small lattice

Choose a system with no more than twelve nodes. Nodes can be people, tasks, resources, habitats, or processes.

You do not need a sophisticated graphing tool. A page and arrows are enough to expose a surprising amount of structure.

## Relationship lattices

A relationship is not a node you own. It is a coupled pathway between centers of agency.

When mapping a relationship lattice, record what each person has explicitly agreed to, what is inferred, and what remains unknown.

Do not convert a private map into a covert ranking system. Do not assign scores to people who have not consented. The purpose of mapping is to clarify your own participation and choices.

## Organizational lattices

Organizations often reveal their values through their pathways rather than their statements.

Ask:

- Who can make a decision?
- Who receives information first?
- Where does approval accumulate?
- Which work is invisible but essential?
- What happens when a central person is absent?
- Can bad news travel upward safely?
- Does the structure distribute repair or dump it on one role?

The answers describe a lattice. They do not automatically explain why it developed. History, incentives, resources, and power also matter.

## Lattice and the cosmic narrative

At cosmic scales, magnetic topology affects how charged particles and energy propagate. At planetary scales, atmospheric and oceanic circulation route heat and matter. In ecosystems, roots, fungi, water channels, and food webs distribute resources and signals. In human systems, communication, care, authority, and infrastructure shape what can move and where it accumulates.

These are not interchangeable mechanisms. The cross-scale question is:

> What arrangement filters, redirects, concentrates, or distributes the flow?

That question makes cosmic weather relevant without making it personal prediction. A planetary magnetic boundary can mediate incoming plasma; a relationship boundary can mediate information. The analogy is functional, not literal.

## Lattice, power, and responsibility

Topology is never neutral when people are involved. A bottleneck may be a technical limitation, an unspoken hierarchy, a resource imbalance, or a deliberate safeguard.

Before changing a lattice, ask:

- Who benefits from the current arrangement?
- Who bears the cost of the bottleneck?
- Who was not included in the map?
- What new risk would a shortcut create?
- What repair capacity exists if the change fails?

A more connected system is not automatically a more just system. More pathways can mean more access, more surveillance, more burden, or more exposure.

## Failure modes

### Hub worship

A central node may be overloaded, powerful, necessary, replaceable, or all four. Do not confuse centrality with virtue.

### Redundancy without clarity

Duplicated pathways can improve resilience or create conflicting instructions. Specify roles and handoffs.

### Mapping without consent

A diagram can become a tool of control. Keep personal relationship maps private and proportionate.

### Confusing visibility with flow

The person who speaks most may not carry the most information, care, or repair.

### Network romanticism

A network is not good merely because it is a network. Examine what it transmits and who can opt out.

The next part turns observation into a daily operating practice. It introduces capacity, load, tempo, and repair while keeping “energy” explicitly in the realm of a functional budget metaphor unless measured otherwise.
